With a shortage of steam locomotives, three diesels were in charge of a cloudy Bank Holiday Monday on the East Lancs Railway. Locos working the three turns were : 37418, 40145 and 55022

With only one steam locomotive available for Saturday's timetable 37109 stepped in for the day. So with the sun out and 37418 booked out for the day it was a good day to be out on the East Lancs Railway.

Featured here are various photos taken on the Oldham Loop line in Greater Manchester which is due to close on the 3rd October 2009 when the line will be handed over to Metrolink to begin a lengthy conversion of the line to become part of Manchester's tram network.

Locos were 37109 with the ECS from Bury to Rawtenstall then 40145 Rawtenstall to Aberystwyth and Aberystwyth to Castleton Station and finally 37401 and 37670 Castleton Station to Rawtenstall.

Pictured here is he empty coaching stock (5Z20) for the East Lancs Crusader coming from Crewe to Bury.
37670 and 37401 as far as Castleton where the train reversed and 40145 led the way for its final leg to Bury on the East Lancs Railway.

With snow on the ground it was a good day to capture some of the trains on the East Lancashire Railway. D5054 and Steamer 4936 made an early appearance then 33109 was a surprise in the afternoon teaming up with D5054 with a round trip from Bury.

After an £800 milion restoraton, St Pancras International is now open for business, it has become home to the Eurostar services on the new High Speed 1 rail link to the Channel Tunnel and the Midland Main line domestic services. Photos taken on the 26th November 2007

37410 produced a rare site around East Manchester today doing driver route training for the autumn railhead treatment trains due to start running next month.

The construction and refurbishment works are almost complete at St Pancras International Station. The international platforms are now host to Eurostars on test on the CTRL 2. Almost ready for the grand opening this November !!

As part of a five day event to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the opening of the East Lancs Railway, 40145 has been painted in "large logo" livery and named East Lancashire Railway.

31233 on Driver training duties, offers a nice change from the usual DMU's that pass Bromley Cross, between Bolton and Blackburn.

The construction and refurbishment works continue at a pace at St Pancras station. The new domestic platforms are now open and it gives the chance to see the original train shed that has under gone a spectacular refurbishment.

My favourite works Swindon, sadly closed in 1986 - Although I had passed it on the train many times I did not get to visit the works until early 1985 but managed four or five visits that year, then when permits were no longer available went with my zoom lens to grab the last photos of the works before its closure.

My first outing of the New Year found English Electrics : 40135 back in green as D335, the last outing for Harry Needles 20901 and 20904 on the East Lancs, Class 31 D5600 and the visitors were 20096 and 20905 from the Harry Needle Railway company.

A selection of pictures from the Roundhouse Railway Centre at Barrow Hill. At the centre there are many locomotives preserved and under restoration, then in the yards many stored for further use or possible component recovery then disposal.

Pictured here at Ron Hull's scrap yard at Rotherham is the recent arrival 56066 from the RTC at Derby and 31417 and 31558. Thanks to Ron Hull Jnr for the photos...Please note unlike the nearby C.F. Booths this yard is not open to visitors...

A further collection of Class 24's and Class 25's from the 1970's and 1980's. Any help would be much appreciated in identifying some of the unknown locations of these photos.

These pictures were taken in August 2005 and show the many scrap locos awaiting disposal at this once busy depot. Some of the locos pictured here are no more, being cut up in recent months.

A rare appearence of a class 37 at the CORUS works at Caslteton, near Rochdale. 37416 arrived with 6M23 1049 from Toton in the bright afternoon winter sun.

It was the East Lancs Railway's Sulzer day with all the usual resident locos in action plus 47575 on loan from Riviera Trains made its debut appearence.

A busy week at Castleton (near Rochdale) saw steam loco 44996 head a charter train from Rawtenstall on the East Lancs Railway to Blackpool North and return on Tuesday Wednesday and Thursday, also pictured here from Friday the 28th is 47851 with the empty coaches from the charters returning from the East Lancs Railway going back to West Coast Railway's depot at Carnforth. Plus a couple of photos at Diggle Jn.

Pictures from the first day of the Llangollen Railway's diesel week, locos working were D1566 (47449) 46010 and 25313 which worked a passenger service from Llangollen to Carrog and back with 2 brake vans, lots of oily faces HELLFIRE !

Whilst clearing out the loft in our house I came across an envelope with some negatives in. They were given to me, I guess ? some years ago when I worked on the Midland Main line at Cricklewood and West Hampstead, however my memory fails me as to who gave them to me ? Any ideas or did you take these photos ?. Anyway I thought it would be a shame not to share these photos with the World Wide Web, they were taken in the early 80's and show the Cricklewood area being modernised with overhead wires erected and the old manual signal boxes and semaphore signals being replaced by a new PSB at West Hampstead and colour light signals.

A selection of photos from Crewe Works Open Weekend on Sunday 11th September 2005. The highlights were 47832 in the "new" FM Rail livery being named "Driver Tom Clark O.B.E." and Class 28 D5705 being lifted off its bogies for the watching crowds !

A few hours on the East Lancs Railway captured one or two resident diesel locos plus D8154 still on loan from the Churnet Valley Railway.

Pictured here is 66103 and 66009 on 1Z29 Ealing Broadway to Preston Docks and it's return 1Z30 - This was the first ever passenger train to travel the entire lenght of the dock railway at Preston in its 150 year history - The charter train travelled over the swing bridge at Preston dock then onto the newly constructed platform at the Ribble Steam Railway museum.

A rare sight of a Class 50, 50031 and a Class 40, 40145 both at Preston Fylde Junction. The 50 arrived with 1Z50 Charter from Birmingham and was replaced with the 40 which was booked to go as far as the Kyle...but only made it to Carlisle where it was replaced with 66229 !

47851 stands in the South Sidings at Preston Station, working for Virgin as the standby loco (Thunderbird) for the WCML from Crewe to Carlisle.
